Social Media Portal Done Right

Vets4Vets, a national, free peer support network for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been working with me and the rest of the Web Development Team at Ridgewood Associates to develop the social media tools and techniques that have helped make their new site a success.

In addition to a slick new look, the site serves as a social media portal, incorporating Vets4Vets-branded social networks. The group's blog. MySpace, Youtube Flickr, and Facebook are all easily accessible from within their Website.

The leaders of the organization will take a Social Media Boot Camp with Me later this month to learn how to use social media to reach out to post-9/11 veterans and get them the help they deserve.

There's a story about the organization in the New York Times, and here's a video from their YouTube Channel, a look through the eyes of Domonique's eyes as he attends a Vets4Vets workshop.

The Boot Camp I'm planning will be a day-long Workshop that will enable Vets4Vets to:

1. Understand the transition that has occurred in the world of communication – from traditional media, to social media.

2. Understand how to effectively use the most popular social networking platforms to build a robust online community.

3. Learn how to turn a blog into a digital communications hub to give readers information in the way they want it.

4. Develop key writing techniques that best work with search engines to improve Web site traffic.

5. Discover some of the most exciting new innovations that are revolutionizing communications to put them on the cutting edge.

What would you put in a social media boot camp for an organization that provides free peer support to veterans? Let me know in comments or on Twitter.
